Designer Profile: Boneless.Girl

Eva Young is the creative force behind Boneless.Girl. She has a unique journey that weaves childhood nostalgia, artistic exploration, and a playful spirit. Born in Halifax and raised on a farm in Nova Scotia, her move to Ottawa and later to Montreal for an undergraduate degree in painting and drawing shaped her creative path. While initially focused on painting, Eva's artistic enthusiasm shifted when she discovered the world of sewing and fabric sculpting. Childhood memories of crafting "toothpick people" and a love for junk and plastic things inspire her work. Eva's brand encapsulates joy, playfulness, and a touch of absurdity, offering an escape from darkness and a focus on light-heartedness.

Design Philosophy: Eva's design philosophy revolves around joy, playfulness, and humour as a response to personal struggles with mental health. Her work serves as an escape and an embodiment of playful joy. Although traces of darkness find their way into her designs, they are intentionally overshadowed by bright, inviting, and dramatic elements. Eva's philosophy rejects the pretentiousness and brutality she perceives in contemporary fashion, opting for innovation, emotion, and a refusal to take itself too seriously.

Signature Style/Technique: Boneless.Girl's distinctive style is characterized by playfulness, hyper-femininity, and comfort. Puffed sleeves, bows, and a sporty touch combine to create Eva's unique aesthetic.

Influences: Eva's influences draw from everyday life, the fashion of the '70s and '80s, and the stylish friends who keep her clued in on trends. While she appreciates designers like Vivienne Westwood and Lou Dallas, Eva finds more inspiration in the real world, everyday clothing, objects, and media. Childhood movies and television, such as Cinderella and The Fox and the Hound, have left a profound mark on her creativity.

Achievements: Eva's earliest achievement was winning a piano recital trophy at the age of 6 for her composition titled "Candy Shop," coincidentally predating 50 Cent's song of the same name.

Brand Ethos: Sustainability is at the core of Boneless.Girl's ethos. Eva strives to use second-hand materials, revitalizing old items and infusing them with new life. Working with used materials presents a unique challenge, as it often requires starting with the materials and letting the idea follow. While Eva now combines both used and new materials, her dedication to sustainability remains unwavering. The process adds depth, personalization, and excitement to her creations.

Future Vision: Eva's brand has evolved organically, and she remains open to its future path. While she entertains the idea of pursuing costume design and working in television and film, she also acknowledges that this may lead to putting Boneless.Girl on hold. The future remains uncertain, but Eva's creative spirit is adaptable and eager to explore new horizons.
